The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) is a new residency program providing rehearsal and performance space to New York City choreographers and dance companies. With lead funding from the New York Community Trust, the CUNY Dance Initiative offers subsidies to participating CUNY colleges to assist with artist fees, rehearsal expenses, and production, marketing, and administrative costs.

In Symbioh, Humans Collective creates a thought-provoking journey inspired by symbiotic relationships and medieval architecture. Artistic Director and choreographer Lauren Cox draws upon an eclectic blend of dance and story telling with roots in Modern, Contemporary Jazz, African and Improvisation to create a rich visual landscape that is by turns playful, meditative, and a joyous celebration of life.

SHOOK ONES AT LPAC

A multimedia dance theater company that utilizes dance, spoken word and projection to create various live experiences.

Shook Ones is a multimedia dance theater company that utilizes dance, spoken word and projection to create live experiences that are visually stimulating, emotionally impactful and socially relevant. Based in NYC, Shook Ones was founded in 2012 by choreographer, Cindy Salgado, and writer/director, Alejandro Rodriguez, both Juilliard alum, who met in South Florida as volunteers for the non-profit, Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP). In January 2014, they were joined by another ASTEP alum, multimedia artist, Yazmany Arboleda, for their debut show at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Rare and Dangerous and Necessary. Their first full-length original work, Sorry, is currently in development at LPAC, with additional support provided by the Center for Innovation in the Arts at The Juilliard School.

BARE DANCE COMPANY AT LPAC

Master Class/Open Rehearsal: September (Date TBA) (11:00am-4:00pm)

BARE choreographer Mike Esperanza will develop a new work, titled Venemous, while in residence at LPAC. The piece dives into the edge of a person’s darkest being, the moment that triggers the impulse to attack or defend against a predator, and the consequences of that choice. 

Between July and December 2014, 10 CUNY colleges in all five boroughs are hosting a total of 19 residencies.
