LaGuardia Community College/CUNY and the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center invites students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to the “Summer of Fun” series, a vibrant lineup of free, community-centered events taking place from May through July on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, and across venues throughout Queens.

Kicking off with a festive Cinco/Seis de Mayo celebration on May 6, the series will bring together students, neighbors, and visitors for an exciting season of cultural celebrations, live performances, music, art, and shared experiences. Other highlights include a dynamic Pride celebration in June, participation in the citywide Make Music New York festival, outdoor performances with Manhattan Opera Repertory Ensemble (MORE Opera), and a large-scale public screening of the World Cup Final.

The “Summer of Fun” series is presented in collaboration with LPAC, Casa de las Américas, CREAR Futuros, and other community partners.

Cinco / Seis de Mayo Festival
Wednesday, May 6 | 2–4 p.m.

LaGuardia Community College’s Cinco de Mayo festival on the Greenway will feature a carnival theme, with games, and performances provided by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, tacos, elotes, virgin margaritas and more in a festive celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

LPAC Community Choir
Open Rehearsals: Wednesdays May 6 through June 17th | 6–8 p.m. 

Free community choir rehearsals facilitated by MORE Opera and designed for anyone who wants to sing. The choir will culminate in two public concerts: June 21 at Lowery Plaza in Sunnyside as part of Make Music New York, and July 2 in LPAC’s Little Theater.

Heightened Scrutiny (free film screening)
Tuesday, May 19 | 6:30 p.m.

A free screening of Heightened Scrutiny, a documentary that follows Chase Strangio, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

In Search of Bengali Harlem (free film screening)
Thursday, May 21 | 6:30 p.m.

In Search of Bengali Harlem follows actor and playwright Alaudin Ullah as he uncovers his parents’ story and the overlooked history of Bengali Muslim immigrants in mid-20th-century Harlem. Moving between New York City and Bangladesh, the film explores migration, identity, family, and the Bengali men who built lives in Harlem despite racist exclusion laws. The evening will include a performance by the Bangladeshi Student Association, a film screening, and a talkback with director Alaudin Ullah.

LaGuardia Pride on the Greenway
Wednesday, June 3  | 1–4 p.m.

Join us for a Pride celebration uplifting creativity, identity, and community across LaGuardia. The day begins at 1:00 p.m. in the M-Lobby with Pride displays created by La Casa Ambassadors, followed by a free outdoor celebration on the Greenway featuring The Bad Judies, a student fashion show, music, food, games, and more. Organizing partners include LPAC, La Casa de las Américas / CREAR Futuros, LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, and the LGBTQIA+ Consortium.

Pride in Queens: Stories from Our Neighborhoods
Friday, June 5, 12, and Thursday, June 18 | 6:30 p.m.

A three-part film screening series focusing on Western Queens neighborhoods that have become important homes to LGBTQIA+ communities.

June 5 - Julio of Jackson Heights tells the story of Julio Rivera, whose 1990 murder in Jackson Heights helped spark the coming out and mobilization of one of New York City’s largest LGBTQ communities.

June 12 - My Sunnyside follows Jo, a trans man, and Allie, a trans woman, as they build a life together in Sunnyside, in a moving portrait of love, family, resilience and joy amid rising transphobia.

June 18 - Bright Vignettes: How Astoria got its Pride celebrates the queer artists, activists, performers, and residents whose grassroots organizing and community history led to Astoria’s first official Pride event in 2023.

Make Music New York

For Make Music New York, LPAC will present a boroughwide series of musical activations across Queens, inviting artists, students, and community partners to bring live music into public spaces in Queens. The day will include a culminating performance by LPAC’s Community Choir, facilitated by MORE Opera, at Lowery Plaza at 40th Street and Queens Boulevard, with additional pop-up performances, on the Greenway and other public spaces in Queens.

The World in Queens: World Cup Watch Parties
Friday, July 10, Wednesday, July 15, and Sunday, July 19 | 12 p.m.

Three free public watch parties featuring dance, music, community activations, and LED screens showing World Cup matches. Presented in partnership with Queensboro Dance Festival, with support from the Association for a Better New York and additional community partners.
